KIDS Classes

WELCOME

Welcome to our KIDS Production class! This class has guaranteed casting. This informational page will hopefully answer some of your questions about this class.

AUDITION MATERIALS

All students will be assigned a role(s) in this class. Mini auditions will be held the first class night to assign roles. It will be very helpful to the success of the student and the class if students were familiar with the audition materials ahead of the first class. Our instructors will take time to review the materials with the students at the beginning of class, before they audition. It is not a requirement to have everything memorized, but rather just be familiar with the songs, lines and choreography. This information will be sent with your welcome email a week prior to class starting.

  • VOCALS: There will be audition cuts from songs as well as the sheet music from the show provided to you. Students are encouraged to listen and sing-along to the songs several times before the first day of class. The songs do not need to be memorized for the audition but it will be very helpful to know the timing and melody of the songs. Students who are interested in a larger speaking role must be willing to sing a solo during the audition process.

  • ACTING: Sides will be provided. These are portions of the script used in the audition process. These do not need to be memorized for the audition, but it will be very helpful if the student is already familiar with the content, especially if they are not strong readers. Students who are interested in a larger speaking role must be willing to read for a part during the audition process.

  • CHOREOGRAPHY: Choreography videos may be provided. If they are, we are mainly looking for a student’s ability to move with the music. We are not necessarily looking for skilled dancers. Students are encouraged to watch the videos and learn the choreography before the first day of class.

GUIDANCE REGARDING CASTING DECISIONS

When auditioning for a show, students typically have a goal and/or desire to be considered for a specific role. While it’s great to have goals, it’s also helpful to understand that casting may not always turn out the way one would hope. We find it helpful if you start preparing your student for potential disappointment if they aren’t cast in the role that they were hoping for. We encourage you to start having those conversations with your student now, before the first night of class.

All roles are important to the telling of the story; however only 1 student will be assigned to a specific role and this is based on the Directors short time with your student during the audition process. There are many factors that are considered during the casting process. It’s not just about the students ability to sing, dance and act. How a student behaves during the audition process is just as important. Do they listen and take direction well? Are they willing to sing a solo? Are they willing to read for a certain role, when asked? These are just a few examples.

It’s also important to note that if a student is cast in an ensemble role, it doesn’t mean that they did poorly on their audition. It may be that your student was noticed to be a leader and that is where they will best support the rest of the cast. All roles are important and needed to tell the story.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping to make this class experience a positive one for your student. It’s our hope that your student will enjoy the process, embrace the role(s) that they are assigned and have a fun class!

PRACTICE AT HOME

It will be very important for your student to put in time each week outside of class time to work on their role(s). This will include learning and memorizing lines, songs and dances. In your welcome email, you will be provided access to our class Callboard. This will be our main means of communication with you after the first class night and will contain all the necessary information and materials your student will need to be successful in this class.
