SHOW SYNOPSIS
In the dark, we hear the sound of an alarm clock ringing, and Tom, a young teacher preparing for his first day of school, appears. As he nervously rehearses what he will say, the Ensemble enters, speaking out his thoughts. These characters are Tom's many emotions, personified: there is George – the romantic side, Dori – the goofy side, Schulie – the sweet side, Joe – the cool side, and Dina – the mature side. His thoughts range from being excited to terrified.
Tom watches some TV to calm himself down. When he turns on the TV, one of his old favorites, "Schoolhouse Rock," is on. As he watches, he gets swept up in the excitement ("Verb: That's What's Happening"). When it ends, he is startled to find his "sides" have come to life and are standing in front of him. They explain that they represent everywhere he has been, everyone he has known and every person that he has ever met ("A Noun Is a Person, Place or Thing"). They are here to help Tom remember that teaching is as easy as counting to three ("Three Is a Magic Number"). Tom thinks he is hallucinating and tries to get rid of them, but he needs them – that's why they're there ("Mother Necessity"). They encourage Tom to remember that he wants to be a teacher because both his grandmother and her mother were teachers. In their lifetimes, teaching was one of the few job opportunities open to women ("Sufferin' 'til Suffrage"). He also remembers working at his grandfather's hardware store as a child and sneaking away on Saturday mornings to watch "Schoolhouse Rock," which taught him about adverbs ("Lolly, Lolly, Lolly"). It also taught him about adjectives ("Unpack Your Adjectives"). But Tom has to teach more than that – math, science and social studies ("Just a Bill / The Preamble"). By revisiting these moments from his childhood and getting caught up in them, Tom remembers that learning can be fun... and that's why he wants to be a teacher ("Ready or Not, Here I Come").
When the gang becomes exhausted from all of the excitement, Tom encourages them to stay active ("Do the Circulation"). Joe is ready to do a song about pronouns, but he needs some help from the group ("Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla"). Schulie plays Tom's guitar; the instrument is shaped like a figure eight, which inspires her to remember how she and Tom learned multiplication tables ("Figure Eight"). Next, George gives a rock and roll physics lesson ("A Victim of Gravity"). Staying on the math and science track, George and Schulie introduce us to a hero who changed counting ("Zero, My Hero").
Although they have covered many parts of speech, Tom thinks of one that they've left out: conjunctions ("Conjunction Junction"). Joe reminds Tom that school will be a very important transition to America for many of his students who are not native English speakers, just as America went through an important transition as it expanded ("Great American Melting Pot / Elbow Room / Interplanet Janet"). The thought of going to the moon has the whole group energized; they use words that properly express that energy ("Interjections"). Tom thanks everyone for helping him. He has one last song for them about sentence structure ("The Tale of Mr. Morton"). As the song ends, all of the characters are gathered around Tom as if he were teaching. He asks if there are any questions, and Schulie's hand goes up.

Forms/Billing
Hello!
Bills have been sent to all cast and crew who registered for a Lovegood portal account. If you did not register for a Lovegood portal account, you received an email with instructions on how to do so.
Quite a few cast and crew have not yet filled out a production team form. We need at least one form from each family. We emailed everyone who we do not yet have a form from.
If you got either (or both) emails, please take care of those items by Thursday, March 7.
If you have billing/forms questions, reach out to Angela Russell (angela.russell@lovegood.company)
Rehearsal Schedule
Rehearsal starts this week! All students should plan on attending rehearsals until the Rehearsal Schedule is finalized. This is a very small cast so it’s likely that students will be called to all rehearsals.
Student Conflicts were reviewed with every student during Callbacks. Most student conflicts were negotiable (work schedule, voice lessons, karate, etc…) and students stated that they would either rearrange schedules or make alternate arrangements so that they could attend these rehearsals. These were marked as such for the Artistic Team to create a productive schedule. Parents and Students, please be sure to have a discussion about this so that you are on the same page with rehearsal expectations.
REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will be held 3 days a week. Students may not be called to all of these rehearsals and/or for the entire rehearsal block, but should keep their availability open for these days until the Rehearsal Schedule is posted. *Held at FBHS

Crew Application
If you want to be part of the magic but don't want to be onstage, there is another way! Come join Crew . We are accepting application from students in 6th-12th grade.
Each crew member is essential to the success of every show. Once tech rehearsals start everything is student run. All staff provide a safe and educational environment during rehearsals and tech week before handing ownership over to the students, who see the show to its close.
Run crew, (sometimes called backstage crew, or backstage ninjas) is crucial to the success of a show, they keep it running smoothly and safely. They are in charge of moving scenery, keeping track of props, costumes, assisting actors and even operating lighting and sound systems. They power the magic for each production!
We will also be taking applications for stage managers/assistant stage managers.
Your time commitment will vary from high to low depending on what job you have. Please see our crew application for all of the different ways to be involved!
Catch you on the dark side!
In order to apply for crew, please do the following:
Portal account. If your family does not have an account on our Portal, please create one. If you have previously taken any classes (including our Fall TOP class), camps or workshops with Lovegood or have previously auditioned for a show with Lovegood, this has already been completed. If this is your first time, welcome! Please register for our portal. You will not need to register for a class once the account is created. We will handle that after the cast list is announced.
Mailing List. We will be using software to automate callboard post emails. If you are new to theater, the callboard is the website we use to communicate important details with cast and crew during the show process. We will use the email address(es) listed on the Audition Form to email you call board updates. In order for this process to work, the email address(es) on your Audition Form need to be on Lovegood’s mailing list. If you do not know if your address is on our list, you can sign up here. (If you get the emails announcing when Lovegood class registration opens, or Lovegood tickets go on sale, you are already on the list). Regardless of whether you choose to join the mailing list, you will be responsible for all information posted on the callboard.
Production Team Form. Production teams are an essential component of our show process. This is an opportunity to support our actors and artistic team by doing the behind the scenes work required to make our shows amazing. We need help with everything from sets and costumes, to helping with house and concessions. It takes a village to put on a show are we are so thankful for our amazing production team members. We need at least one adult from each family to support the show, but the more the merrier. Please have each adult volunteer fill out the Production Team Form. You will receive SERVE hours.
Crew Application. If you are ready to commit, complete our Crew Application. Make sure ALL CONFLICTS are listed on the Crew Application. Students with conflicts during any performance will not be accepted on Crew.
SM/ASM Application. If you interested in being a Stage Manager or Assistant Stage manager, you can fill out our SM/ASM Application.
BILLING: If you are accepted to Crew or as SM/ASM you will be invoiced for your show tuition ($50). If you are not accepted, you will not be charged. We do not issue refunds. Please review our payment policy for more information regarding billing, credits, and payment plans.
Rehearsal & Performance Schedule (Cast and Crew)
Producing a successful musical is very rewarding, but it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Theater is just like any team sport: all the players are important and when one performer is missing, it affects everyone. Before auditioning for the show, please make sure that you are aware of the large commitment involved in participating in this production.
We anticipate releasing the rehearsal schedule with the cast list. Cast/Crew must attend all of their scheduled rehearsals, however, please note that not all Cast/Crew will be needed for each rehearsal. A student’s individual rehearsal schedule will be based on the role that he or she is playing in the production. We hope to get a full rehearsal schedule to cast and crew as quickly as possible. Please note, however, if a student is not called for a particular rehearsal, that is not listed as a conflict for that student, do not make any non-movable plans for that time block. Schedules can and do change depending on the needs of the show, and unless a conflict is listed on the student’s Audition Form, we assume the student is available during all rehearsal blocks. Crew will typically be called to fewer rehearsals than cast until the end of the rehearsal process.
Generally rehearsal blocks will be Mondays from 3:15-6pm, Wednesdays from 3:15-4:45pm and Thursdays from 3:15pm-6pm. There will be no scheduled rehearsal during spring break, however, we may schedule optional pick up rehearsals that week.
Tech/Dress Week: All Tech/Dress rehearsals will be held at Lovegood Performing Arts Company 16260 NW Bronson Road, Beaverton, OR 97006. All cast/crew students should be available for these dates:
Monday, April 22, 2024 from 5pm - 9pm
Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 5pm - 9pm
Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 5pm - 9pm
Thursday, April 25, 2024 from 5pm - 9pm
Performance Dates: All performances will be held at Lovegood Performing Arts Company 16260 NW Bronson Road, Beaverton, OR 97006. Student Call times are TBD but will likely be approximately 1-2 hours before the first performance time.
